Hello friends,

This year seems to be a year of gratitude and exciting new opportunities for us. We're excited to share more with you what's going on with us.

“The eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the earth, to show himself strong in those whose heart is perfect toward him.”

(2 Chronicles 16:9)

The eyes of the Lord... what a wonderful promise for us and for you! My prayer immediately follows: Our Father in heaven, our hearts and lives shall belong to you undividedly. Forgive us where we have fallen short. We want to love you first. Show yourself powerful in us and through us, so that more and more people all over the earth will turn to you undividedly!

Damaris writes:

What's going on with the Kliemts?

We had a wonderful time with Christina, who was on her sabbatical, and Luciane, who spent her time abroad with us after graduating from high school. They actively and diligently supported us in school and often looked after the children in the afternoons. At the end of their time here, they looked back with gratitude and said that they had enjoyed their time here, broadened their cultural perspectives, and were able to experience more with God.

Clara has now arrived and would like to stay with us until the end of the school year.
Hats off to you young people who are embarking on such an adventure and doing us and the people here a great service!

Wedding of our friends and domestic staff Josephat and Lilian

We were privileged to provide spiritual guidance to Josephat and Lilian, who both work for us in our house and on our compound, before their wedding. They were able to experience the liberating power of Jesus in their lives. For years, dark forces had laid claim to Josephat, tormenting him with severe pain at very specific times of the night. But our friends consciously placed their lives under God's rule, confessed their sins, and consequently changed their lifestyle. Jesus completely set Josephat free through prayer. Since then, the pain hasn't returned. The two now come to our church and have found a connection there.

"Real action again!"

When you live here, adventures sometimes come along spontaneously and completely unexpectedly. About three months ago, a snake wandered into our house. During school time, our housekeeper, Lilian, left the living room door open too long in the morning.

But even in this situation, the Lord had his eyes on us, and Lilian heard an inner voice four times in a row telling her to go inside. The first two times, she was reluctant because she wanted to stay with the fries she was preparing on the gas stove in the outdoor kitchen. But because she already knew the voice of the Holy Spirit and it wouldn't let up, she went inside and saw the creature slithering into the kitchen. She immediately ran outside and called our gardener, Josephat, her husband. By then, the snake had already reached the children's room, where Elia was taking his break. He heard the hissing, saw the creature, and quickly fetched his knife from the shelf, but Josephat was already there, deftly picking up the snake with a broom and the knife, and brought it outside, where, with Elia's help, he finally dispatched it. Elia simply said, "Some real action again!"

Beautiful and muddy

In April we took a trip to a mighty waterfall that cascades down from a long cave. (German soldiers had barricaded themselves in this cave during the First World War.) It was already late afternoon and the sun was low. On the way back in the Toyota we slid off the road in a very muddy spot into the sloping bushes. I said a quick prayer. We asked two motorcyclists for help, and three other men joined us. With the emergency shovel, a rope tied at the right angle to a tree on the other side of the road, and our combined strength, we were able to get the car back into the rut. After half an hour we were able to drive back to Mbeya with our shoes completely covered in mud. Thank you Jesus for sending people with hearts at the right time!

From the beginning of March to mid-May, Daniel, his colleague Mwasandube, our friend Emmanuel, and I took two online courses: an audio production course and the Frontiers Filmmaking Seminar. For the audio course, we produced radio plays with Christians from the Nyiha people. It was a special gift for me to be able to work on something so wonderfully creative after so many years of homeschooling and routine work. We learned many technical and content details for making films for unreached people groups that convey the gospel in a culturally relevant and engaging way. This included film production, script writing, casting, camera angles, editing, marketing, and much more.

Daniel writes:

In the second and third weeks of June, our family traveled to southwest Zambia. We had been invited to participate in a spiritual retreat for approximately 150 long-term missionaries. The entire retreat was fully funded by a very generous Christian organization from the USA. We enjoyed fantastic food in a 5-star hotel, free spa treatments, gifts, worship, good conversations, and prayer. A fantastic program for children and teens—a truly pampering experience. We added a few days of vacation and visited Victoria Falls and a mission station in Livingstone. After hearing moving accounts from missionaries and touched by the love of God, we returned safely to Mbeya after altogether 3,400-kilometer on the road.

From 300 to less than 30

Since our last Kliemtpost, I was able to attend a strategy meeting for the future work of SIL Tanzania in Dar es Salaam in January. One piece of news has moved me deeply since then. While 10 years ago, our organization SIL sent out around 300 missionaries a year to carry out Bible translation work, today that number is fewer than 30 per year. Donations from Western countries are declining, and some urgently needed work cannot be done. Some of the local churches here are still very young, and it will take some time before more Christians here understand the vision from Matthew 28:18-20 as a commission from Tanzanians to Tanzanians. I don't think the harvest has been reaped yet. In some language groups here, there are fewer than 1 per mille Christians.

I wonder, are there fewer Christians today than 10 years ago asking for harvest workers to be sent out, are there fewer Christians in the Western world seriously asking about God's will and expressing a willingness to follow the paths God has planned for them?

“The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are
few. Therefore pray to the Lord of the harvest,
that he might send out workers into his harvest.”
(Jesus Christ, Luke 10:2)

Our dream: 100 leaders among the Ndali

Over the past two months, we have been shooting a film in stages among the Ndali people about hypocritical Christianity and alcohol abuse. The goal is to help churches and congregations deal with the serious alcohol problem among their people, to find ways to help people inside and outside the congregations understand the liberating message of the gospel in depth and not allow themselves to be trapped by addiction. With our EthnoArts team, we recorded twenty-four newly composed songs by the Ndali at the end of April and May, which reflect specific Bible verses to be sung in addiction support groups. The composers have already recorded the newly learned songs in their own language. They also presented them in their communities and the response has been overwhelming.

Now in July, preparations for the addiction recovery program for the Ndali are continuing intensively. The small group guideline has now been translated into Swahili and Ndali language. By the beginning of August we would like to finish the recordings of the contents and questions for 50 discussion evenings as audio versions. With this material the participants will be able to hear the questions and at the same time learn to read their language. In the second half of July I will travel together with Mwasandube and the Ndali Bible translators to their language area in Tanzania and Malawi to conduct seven smaller pastors' conferences. One theme during the next two weeks will be the power of music in local styles, and we will ask the pastors to look for suitable people in their communities, who are going to be trained to lead the addiction recovery groups. We have the budget to invest in seven regions and a total of over two hundred pastors and later to train one hundred group leaders. Please pray that God will choose the right people prepared to serve his community in the Ndali area and thus to bless the whole people.

Distributing the work of the Sangu across several shoulders

...that is our goal for the coming years among the Sangu people. In mid-May, we called ten dedicated small group leaders to Mbeya. We trained them and then sent them back to encourage other leaders and visit groups in their language area that had been formed in recent years during the so-called Joseph Project. The Joseph Project included the large Joseph theater tour in the Sangu region, but also the founding of almost 50 small groups. To date, approximately 30 groups have continued, in which both the Joseph story and other Bible texts are studied in depth. Our goal is to build deep and trusting relationships with these ten young people, to encourage them in following Jesus, and to provide them with the tools they need to support the Sangu small groups. Please pray for these ten people that God will guide them, strengthen them in their faith, and work powerfully through them. We no longer have the funds for our further work with the Sangu, but we would like to continue investing in this people with many very young congregations and young Christians. If someone would like to donate specifically to Sangu, please indicate “for Sangu” when making the donation.

Visit from Germany

We were truly honored when Dorothee and Martin Zywietz from the Evangelical Free Church in Ludwigsburg visited us in the last week of June. They learned more about SIL's work and, in addition to visiting a few tourist attractions, were even able to join us for a trip to the village, where we videotaped two previously unknown Sangu art forms for a deeper understanding of the culture.

Smartphone film competition

During the first week of June, Emmanuel and I conducted a video seminar in Mbeya. Three participants from each of four ethnic groups learned how to produce their own films using their smartphones and simple software. The goal was to convey culturally relevant, biblical content in their language areas, thus bringing people into contact with the Bible in their own language. I encouraged the participants to enter a competition: whoever produces the best Bible-related film in the local language by the end of August will receive a microphone set as a reward. Please pray that the four teams produce something that pleases God, helps people with their challenges, and helps them get to know Jesus.

Thank you so much!

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support, your donations, and your prayers for us and our projects. Thank you so much! May Jesus richly bless you!

All the best, Daniel, Damaris, Samuel, Rebekah and Elijah
